Fitness and Body Conditioning
Here, we will explore different aspects about canine fitness and conditioning and WHY it is SO important for all ages!
Proprioception:

What is proprioception?
This is having an understanding of movement and where our limbs are in space, even in the dark. Proprioceptors are located in muscles and joints, which are responsible for determining the movements and positioning of the body. They communicate with the brain and relay information about the body’s movements and orientation. Proprioception skills work hand in hand with balance (maintain body position and centre of gravity) and coordination (ability to move parts of the body together effectively).
Proprioception skills can help a dog learn new motor skills as well as develop muscle memory, which is crucial for everyday activities and aids in injury prevention. It improves balance, coordination and confidence from puppies to seniors!
Loss of proprioception can lead to dogs dragging their paw while walking, decreased coordination or inappropriate placement of paws when stepping, unsteadiness, knuckling and delayed correction of limb positioning. It is important to seek veterinary care immediately if loss of proprioception is seen.
Like children, it is important we work on our puppies proprioception skills, to help with their over all health and wellbeing.
How do we do this for puppies?
-
Gaining positive experiences on different types of (safe) surfaces
-
Wobble boards
-
Teaching walking backwards (fantastic for hind end awareness and strength!)
-
Ladder work/scattered sticks
-
2 paws up
-
Instability work
It is really important we take into account the puppies age as they are still growing and ensure each pup/dog is not put in a situation where injury could occur, this is why a plan is important.
